The eyes of the golfing world may have been glued to The Open at Carnoustie yesterday but for our man Richard McEvoy there was serious business in France to take care of in the Le Vaudreuil Challenge.
Rich or Maccas as he is affectionately known on tour claimed an impressive wire-to-wire victory over playing partner and good friend Steven Tiley closing with a final round 68 (-3) at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil.
Prior to the final day, McEvoy carded rounds of 64, 66 and 68 which contained just two bogeys in a near faultless display of imperious golf. Starting the day with a four shot lead over Tiley he made the perfect start with a birdie at the first before adding a further birdie on the 8th to maintain his four shot cushion at the turn. Winning however is never easy and when Tiley made a birdie on the 12th and Rich bogeyed 13 the gap was down to just two.
As is so often with tournament professional golf there was a crucial moment on the back nine on Sunday. It came on the Par-4 15th when Richard holed a great putt for par before both players hit it close for birdie 2’s at the next. Par’s from both players on 17 ensured a two shot gap playing the last which both players duly birdied with McEvoy coming out on top with a two shot victory on 18 under par and some six shots clear of third place.
A delighted McEvoy said: “I am over the moon. Steven ran me hard today but I hit some great shots coming in and there is nothing quite like a win for your confidence. I’ve got a lot of belief in my game right now and this is the first time I have won wire-to-wire at this level so I’m really chuffed!
This week Richard heads to Germany for the Porsche Open on the European Tour and has his sights firmly fixed on regaining his full tour status with a packed second half schedule ahead.
