A brilliant final round of 62 (-9) from Pedro Oriol secured the Spaniard’s first European Tour Top-10 finish in the Tshwane Open at Pretoria Country Club yesterday.

Oriol scorched to the turn in 31 to reach 6-under par.  Three more birdies followed before a bogey on 16 halted his progress up the leaderboard.  A bounce back birdie three on 17 was followed by two majestic shots into the par-5 18th and a chance to close with an eagle.  No problem, Pedro cooly slotted home his final putt of the day and a round of 62 which included nine 3’s and a two!

62 was the lowest round of the week at Pretoria Country Club and moved Pedro from 47th at the start of the day to a tie for 8th position – his best finish on the European Tour to date having regained his card last year in the Challenge Tour’s Road to Oman.

Using all of the experience he has gained on tour, Pedro ground out a challenging day two, birding his last two holes to make the half way cut with just a shot to spare and the chance to make his move at the weekend.

Speaking after the round, Pedro said “That felt really really good… I’ve been playing good golf all week but have been fighting with my putter. I’ve been working hard on my putting and finally today I make some putts. But I’m pleased – I stayed patient all week. The finish was awesome…! That will give me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. I’m really happy – I think it’s going to be a great year. I’m going to keep grinding and working hard and all will be fine.”

Next stop for Pedro will be in his home city of Madrid where the Open de España returns to the European Tour at Centro Nacional de Golf in April.

Fantastic performance Pedro, great golf!
