Going into the final “regular” Race to Dubai tournament – Portugal Masters, Richard McEvoy needed a Top-5 finish to retain his tour card for the 2017 season.
A frustrating opening round of 71 on a course yielding an abundance of birdies looked to have all but ended McEvoy’s hopes. +1 through eight holes on day two and Rich was way off the cut mark. Then the putter finally caught light – six birdies in his last 10 holes including a gutsy three on his final hole saw our man through to the weekend on the cut line – 4-under par.
With scoring incredibly low, a top-5 finish still looked a distant hope. A further 67 (-4) on Saturday moved Rich in the right direction but only a miracle on Sunday would save him from another visit to Q-School.
A final round of 64 (-7), including six threes in seven holes on the back nine wasn’t quite enough to secure his card but it was a brilliant effort and had the consolation of a decent cheque to close out the season.
Terrific effort Rich and we wish you all the luck at Q-School…
