A brilliant display of first class ball striking at the weekend (68, 69) from Team Jenahura’s Richard McEvoy secured a best of the season third place in the Lyoness Open yesterday. Incredibly, he made just one bogey in his last 46 holes!
Starting the day three shots back, Richard birdied three of his first five holes to move within one of overnight leader, China’s Ashun Wu. Solid pars through the most difficult holes around the turn were followed by a spectacular drive and the easiest of birdies on the short par-4 13th that briefly took him into the outright lead. Sadly, he just couldn’t buy a putt over the closing few holes and in the end Wu who recovered impressively from a wobble around the turn claimed top spot, finishing on -13, one stroke ahead of exciting Spanish talent Adrian Otaegui and two ahead of McEvoy.
There were mixed emotions for Richard after the round. Naturally, he was disappointed not to have collected his first European Tour victory but was excited with how he played in the heat of the battle on Sunday. He is playing some terrific golf right now and takes a lot of confidence heading into the second half of the season. Just three weeks ago McEvoy finished in a tie for seventh position in the AfrAsia Open in Mauritius and with yesterday’s performance leaps up the Race to Dubai and the Official World Golf Rankings.
With the US Open taking centre stage this week, next stop for Richard is the BMW International Open in Cologne which starts on Thursday 23rd June. We wish him all the very best for another great week and let the good form continue.
